Vera Powell Glenn

Vera Powell Glenn says "My family has been associated with the New Church and education for a long time. It's in my blood and in my heart. My so many-times great grandfather, a minister in the Church of the New Jerusalem, may have had the first New Church School in Ohio in the early 1800s. In 1914, Arthur H. Powell, my grandfather, moved his family to Bryn Athyn where they would live and work on the Academy Farm and benefit from the fine school and the religious community. All eight of the Powell children attended the Academy of the New Church. My father, David Powell, also had two years at what is now Bryn Athyn College-the first in his branch of the family to receive any college education. He spoke with delight and appreciation of his school days, and often wondered what would have become of the Powell family if they hadn't come to Bryn Athyn. It was my father who urged me to become an Academy teacher.

After my father's death, it seemed right to take part of the monetary inheritance to support my spiritual inheritance. I enrolled in the planned giving program, setting up a fund to benefit research at Bryn Athyn College in the name of my husband, E. Bruce Glenn, who served as Dean of the College for ten years. Recently I was able to add to that with another gift. This is our opportunity to help this wonderful school grow and prosper-a fountain from which knowledge of the Lord in His Second Coming can flow throughout the world."

Vera Powell Glenn grew up on the apple orchard farm on Tomlinson Road. She recently made her second planned gift to Bryn Athyn College, and has named the college as a beneficiary in her will. Vera is a charter member of the Johnny Appleseed Legacy Society. We are certain that her father, David, and her husband, Bruce, would be proud of this legacy.
